Oliver!: King Tubby - Sir Nineys Rock (8 March 1992)

Although quite a few pieces of King Tubby's work have cropped up on this blog, it's fair to say that my reaction to most of it has been grudging to say the least.  So what a pleasure it is to introduce a solid gold hit.  Tubby's own presence on this is quite subtle - a few echoed extensions here, very little drop out etc.  Instead, he lets The Observer All-Stars hit a wonderful groove and works with it to create something close to reggae disco.  As a concept, that sounds ghastly, but in practice here - with rippling drums to the fore, snaky bassline and horns spitting out into the funky mess, it sounds wonderful.
